Three new grants recommended by Northwest Medical Center of Washington County Auxiliary Fund approved by NWACF Board

For Release: June 15, 2001

Springdale, AR - The Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation (NWACF) awarded three grants for $50,000 to regional organizations. The three grants were recommended by the Northwest Medical Center of Washington County Auxiliary Fund and later approved by NWACF Board of Directors on June 15.

The three grants recommended by the Northwest Medical Center of Washington County Auxiliary Fund were:

  • Community Clinic — $25,000 to support an immunization program for children.
  • Kids for Health — $20,000 to support health education programs in one Springdale school.
  • Lane House — $5,000 to support summer activities for at-risk youth.

In an earlier check presentation on June 19, four representatives from the Northwest Medical Center of Washington County Auxiliary and two from NWACF traveled to Eureka Springs to give the check personally to Mary Jo Rose, Executive Director of Lane House. The $5,000 grant marked the first one made by NWACF in Carroll County. Lou Jorgensen, Ginny McClain, Joyce Dunn, and Jean Indorf represented the Auxiliary Fund while Suzanne Ward and Connie Hendrix-Kral were NWACF representatives.

"This check ensures that the drama portion of our summer arts program will be available to the youth of Carroll County," stressed Rose.

The $25,000 grant to Community Clinic will help provide vaccines to 2,800 children and working poor families in northwest Arkansas.

Kids for Health will use their $20,000 to continue to provide health education services to students in K-3 in Washington County. Each year, about 8,400 students participate in the Kids for Health each week.

The Northwest Medical Center of Washington County Auxiliary raises its funds from sales at a gift shop inside Northwest Medical Center of Washington County and from its thrift shop at 400 Park Street. Volunteers run both operations. In September 2000, the Auxiliary presented a $190,000 check to the Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation that signaled a $3 million milestone for their philanthropic giving. Because Northwest Medical Center of Washington County was sold to a for-profit entity, the Auxiliary made the decision to become a donor-advised fund within NWACF. This decision allowed the group to focus on grants while NWACF managed their fund professionally and offered complete staff support.

Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation was founded in 1998 as the Community Foundation of Bentonville/Bella Vista. In November 1999, its purpose was expanded to include all of Northwest Arkansas, and to serve as the lead public foundation operated in connection with CommunityCare Foundation, Inc.
