The Bella Vista Public Library was founded in 1981 by resident retirees who volunteered their time in establishing a collection of donated books for checkout. Originally housed in Riordan Hall, the library enterprise grew and moved to a rented space in the Town Center. A building fund drive gathered sufficient funds to build a 7,000 square foot building which opened in April 1996. A full-time librarian was hired in 1996, and a part-time assistant in 1997. All other staff, now numbering more than 140, is volunteer.
