Saint Francis House was founded in 1989 by local church and civic leaders who wanted to provide food, shelter and clothing to the homeless. Within four years, as the growing number of uninsured and working poor became apparent, the organization shifted its emphasis to healthcare and became Community Clinic at St. Francis House, providing basic medical and dental care on a sliding fee basis.
